Punk was somethng that passed by me in the 90s (I was much more into classic rock and jazz}, and now I would like to broaden my musical tastes. What riot grrl groups and albums do you suggest I start with? Thanks for the help!
Thanks, I'll try the first two and the first Le Tigre. I really appreciate the help. What would you suggest from groups like Hole, Babes in Toyland, 7 Year Bitch, and L7? Another reason I'm asking is that I'm going to be teaching a women's history class in the spring and I would like a good cross section of music to present to my students. I've liked the short cuts from the three albums I talked about above on Amazon. Obviously a good part of the message is lost on 30 second cuts out of a song though.

all the suggestions are great.
i would like to reiterate the distillers, Broday Dalle has been so influential to me and her new project Spinerette although they are still finding their feet
Yeah, all these suggested bands are awesome. I would also highly reccomend the Lunachicks, if you want to focus more on raw all-female punk.
You can also check out the Distillers who are an awesome punk band as well (female-fronted). The Gits is also female-fronted, and if you've never heard of them, look into the life of the lead singer Mia Zapata. It might be of interest to your class as well.
Thanks for replying. My thought is to talk about the angry stage as women break away from the male punk scene and then cover the maturation of the music over time. I listened to the Gits, and they were very good. Love the name! I'll do some reading about Miz Zapata. I'll check out the Lunachicks and the Distillers, too. I've been listening to L7 and like a good deal of their stuff. I really appreciate all of the help.
From Hole, I'd suggest 'Pretty On The Inside' and 'Live Through This'. I love their other stuff, but alot of people don't.
Babes In Toyland, EVERYTHING is a masterpiece..Spanking Machine and Fontanelle would be their best though, but the Painkillers EP is also great to..and To Mother.
I only have downloads of 7 Year Bitch, but they are excellent too..but I can't really help with the albums as I own none as of yet =[
I think the best of L7's was Hungry For Stink, Smell The Magic and Bricks Are Heavy.
I also highly suggest Sleater-Kinney, 'Call The Doctor'. Love those grrrls.
Hope this helps somewhat =]]
All the bands that everyone is suggesting are great...I would also highly suggest Sleater-Kinney, awsome band, Call the Doctor is amazing...alot of old school oly stuff with Lois is great. The Need are an awsome band of grrrls. Good Luck with your class.
Thanks, grrrls, your suggestions have been great. This is why I became a feminist about 40 years ago. People helping people. I can't begin to tell you how excited I am about this. Thank you so very much for all of your help!
definitely bikini kill, and maybe bratmobile too, but everyones already said that really. i haven't been into riot grrrl long but bikini kill had a huge effect on me, they're fantastic.
